Competition for spots is heating up according to Jarryd Lyons, who admits he’s being kept honest by his younger teammates.

Speaking to Lions Media after the team’s first match simulation, the 29-year-old said there was plenty to like out on the track.

“The boys have been itching to have a proper kick,” Lyons said.

“We had a couple of 10-minute blocks, and we were able to see some good Lions style footy.

“Some of the young guys played some really good footy and it’s putting a lot of pressure on some of us older blokes. It’s an exciting time of year, especially seeing these young draftees coming through.”

There was no holding back on the track, with Rhys Mathieson copping a nasty knock to the nose.

With approximately 90% of the Lions list fit and running, Lyons said that the jostle for spots has never been so fierce.

“You’ve probably got 20 blokes who can play through the midfield at the moment.

“From them, you’ve got squeeze 8, maybe 10 if you’re lucky into a team and there’s guys who haven’t even played senior footy knocking the door down.

“They’re certainly keeping me, Lachie, Hugh and Bez very honest.”
