As the Brisbane Lions gear up for the second half of the 2015 season, lions.com.au has asked the journalists covering the team to analyse the year so far.

Today, Brisbane Times and Fairfax AFL reporter Beth Newman has her say in the the 'Mid-Season Verdict" series:

1. In one line, sum up the Brisbane Lions’ season to date:

Beth Newman: It hasn't lived up to the expectations that came along with the off-season recruits but a horrendous run with injuries, particularly to key position players and the leaders of the team, has played a major role in that.

2. What’s been the biggest positive of 2015 so far?

BN: Seeing glimpses of their potential. When the Lions run the ball through the middle and move it quickly, they look dangerous. Their skills haven't been able to match up with that style this season but when they have some more experienced players back, the two should start to align.

The Mid-Season Verdict: Alister Nicholson

3. What’s the area that needs the most improvement?

BN: What’s the area that needs the most improvement?
Brisbane's tackling pressure needs to improve. They are 17th in the league in average tackles and to compete with the top teams, that defensive pressure needs to get better.

4. Best player in 2015 to date?

BN: Stefan Martin has had another outstanding season. His ability to make an impact at stoppages even though he is a lot of times out sized in the ruck has helped the Lions. He just beats out Dayne Beams, who has been superb, leading the midfield in Tom Rockliff's absence.

5. Best young player in 2015 to date?

BN: First-year player Harris Andrews has adapted to senior football really well. He competes well and his strong contested marking has made him an important addition to the defensive end. He sill has plenty of improvement in him.

The Mid-Season Review: Michael Whiting

6. Most improved player in 2015 to date?

BN: Marco Paparone has taken a step forward this season. He's always been really athletic but his game sense has improved. His run off the half back line has been important and he's made himself a mandatory selection rather than a fringe player.

7. In one line, sum up what a successful 2nd half of 2015 looks like for the Brisbane Lions:

BN: A successful second half sees a handful of players return and we'll actually be able to see Brisbane play more of the running, attacking style of play that they have tried to.

8. What do you think of Brion the Lion?

BN: Brion is a very good tweeter for someone with giant paws.
