Matthew Leuenberger is already regarded as one of the AFL’s premier ruckmen, but has warned that his best football is yet to come.

Leuenberger fronted the media at the Gabba on Wednesday morning alongside teammate Dayne Zorko following the announcement that both had agreed to new contracts with the Club.

The Lions ruckman has extended his stay in Brisbane until at least the end of 2015, and is confident that he can take his game to a new level over the next two seasons.

“I’d like to think that I can be a significantly better player than I am right now,” Leuenberger said.

“The reality is I’ve had a lot of injuries throughout my career, and haven’t really had the continuity in my training and playing.

“So I’d like to think if I have a bit of luck, and can string games together over the next two years, then I can be a better player than I currently am.”

Leuenberger said the Club’s bright future and loyalty were deciding factors in re-signing with the Club.

“The most attractive thing about our list at the moment is that there are some really talented individuals coming through, I feel,” he said.

“I haven’t really had too much success here, so I want to come through with those blokes.

“I also like the idea of being a one-club player and showing loyalty. It’s something that I value, so I wanted to hang around.”

Zorko, meanwhile, has committed for a further three seasons just 18 months after being handed an AFL lifeline by the Lions.

The former Broadbeach Captain thought his AFL dream might have never been realised, until the Lions secured him as a mature-age recruit during the 2011 Trade Period.

“A few years ago, if someone had offered me a contract at the Brisbane Lions, I would’ve been absolutely stoked,” Zorko said.

“And for them to still have faith in me is something I just can’t believe.

Zorko couldn’t contain his enthusiasm when discussing his future with the Lions.

“I’m loving each day here. It’s a fantastic environment – I love the Gabba and I love the Brisbane Lions. I’m rapt,” he said.

“The Club’s in a fantastic position and we’re growing week-in week-out.

“And with young guys like Sammy Mayes…coming through, it made the decision even easier.”
