Senior Coach Michael Voss believes the more senior members of the Lions’ side play a critical role in the on-field development of the team’s younger players.

Voss said an improved work rate from the Club’s leaders filtered through the team during last Saturday’s match against Fremantle in Perth.

“Certainly our work rate has been a little bit off, and that’s the first thing that needs to be put on the right track,” Voss told LIONS TV as part of the Vero Coaches’ Wrap.

“When that increase comes from your leadership group and other players, then the players that are younger are influenced by that and they have to deliver.

“Thankfully, I think our leadership group has put a lot more emphasis on that, and as a result some of these younger players were able to join in the physical stakes also.”

However, Voss said that the same set of ‘non-negotiables’ apply to every player – regardless of whether they’ve played one or 300 games.

“I think we had 11 players with under 50 games (last weekend,” Voss said.

“But there’s always an expectation in our team that there’s certain things that need to be done.”

After making a season-high seven changes to last week’s side, Voss and his coaching staff are hoping to maintain a more settled side in the second half of the season.

“We weren’t able to finish out the game strong enough, and that has a lot to do with our match fitness,” Voss said.

“So the focus for us is to settle the team down and make sure guys get familiar with positions so that when they go out there, they build those relationships.”
