James Polkinghorne and Matt Maguire have agreed to terms on new contracts that will see them both remain at the Brisbane Lions in 2014.

Polkinghorne has decided to extend his stay in Brisbane by re-signing for another year.

The 24-year-old has played 92 games in six seasons with the Club since being drafted from Calder U18s in Victoria with Pick No.41 at the 2007 AFL National Draft.

Maguire has also agreed to a new one year deal which will see him add to his career tally of 155 senior AFL games – 56 of which have been played with the Lions.

Lions General Manager – Football Operations, Dean Warren, expects both players will perform key roles for the Club next season.

“It’s probably no secret that James spent some time over the off-season weighing up his AFL future, but after speaking with new Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch, he decided to remain in Brisbane,” Warren said.

“The Club sees him as being a valuable player who is about to enter the prime of his career.

“Matt, on the other hand, is about to reach the twilight of his career, but his performances over the past few years have shown that he can still match it with some of the best forwards in the competition.

“He was particularly important last year when Daniel Merrett was moved forward, and is another experienced campaigner that our young defenders such as Justin Clarke and Jordon Bourke can learn from.”

Polkinghorne and Maguire will return for pre-season training with the rest of the Lions’ 2014 squad on Monday 4 November before heading to Arizona for high altitude training.
