If Claye Beams lines up for the Brisbane Lions in Perth this Saturday night, he will achieve a personal best in terms of consecutive senior AFL games.

Beams is set to play his fifth straight senior match against the Dockers – which will surpass his previous record of four consecutive games between Rounds 20-23 in 2012.

It seems a remarkably low figure for a player in his fifth AFL season and of Beams’ ability, but the picture becomes clearer when you consider his unfortunate injury history.

So it’s no wonder that the local Queenslander refuses to get too comfortable at senior level.

“I take it week to week, and don’t count my chickens,” Beams told Dom Fay and Michael Whiting as part of this week’s Fancast.

“This will be my fifth game in a row – which is something I haven’t been able to do for a couple of years.

“It’s a good feeling. I just have to keep doing what I’m doing and try and stay out on the paddock every week.”

Beams overcame a knee reconstruction to complete a full pre-season in 2014, before breaking a bone in his foot during the team’s final NAB Challenge match against Sydney at Burpengary.

It kept him sidelined for a couple of months, but he eventually earned his place back in the senior side by Round 9.

The 22-year-old is gaining more confidence in his body each week, and hopes to get even more continuity in his football throughout the next stage of his career.

“Every week I’m feeling better and better,” Beams said.

“I look forward to repaying the Club as they’ve invested a lot in me.”
