Brent Staker’s torrid run with injuries has continued with the Brisbane Lions revealing on Tuesday that the 30-year-old has suffered a stress fracture in his foot.

Staker underwent two separate knee reconstructions in 2011, before making a successful return to the field early in 2013 and paying the final 15 matches of that season.

He has since been dogged by a persistent calf injury, which has kept him sidelined for the entire 2014 season to date, but was set for a NEAFL return last week before suffering this latest setback.

Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton effectively closed the door on Staker’s 2014 campaign, saying he would return to rehab with an eye on next pre-season.

“He’s had a torrid year with injury, the last couple of years really,” Burton told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

“It’s always a risk when you’re out for so long that when you re-load these guys there’s an increased chance of re-injury.

“Unfortunately he has a stress fracture in his foot, so he’s done for the season. We’ll look to get him fresh and right for a good pre-season.”

Burton also confirmed that Jack Redden’s unbroken streak of 112 senior matches since his 2009 debut was being threatened by an ankle complaint.

“He’s got a little bit of an issue with his ankle. We’re still waiting on some scan results and he still needs to see the specialist on Wednesday,” Burton said.

“He’s certainly in doubt for this week and going forward.”

Meanwhile, Matthew Leuenberger and Patrick Wearden will continue to be monitored closely after making their returns through the NEAFL last weekend.

“Both guys played about two-thirds or three quarters of the game. That was what we had planned for them,” Burton said.

“Both of those guys have been out for a long period of time, so it’s just getting them back to playing footy again.”

Tom Cutler is also expected to spend a month on the sidelines after struggling with a groin injury.
