The Brisbane Lions are taking a cautious approach to Matthew Leuenberger’s recovery, after the ruckman pulled up sore from last Saturday’s NEAFL clash with the Giants.

It was Leuenberger’s second game back following a 10-week lay-off due to a knee injury, however he was taken from the field at half-time when advising of a sore Achilles.

Given the 26-year-old’s recent history with his Achilles, Bupa Recovery Team Member Matt Hass said it was important that he doesn’t aggravate it further.

“Leuey’s a bit of a work in progress. He tore his Achilles in Round 3 a couple of years ago,” Hass told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

“It’s general maintenance and making sure he’s pulling up week to week. It did flare up a little bit just before half time, so we took the cautious approach to finish his game there.”

Hass also confirmed that Jack Redden had undergone surgery late last week and would be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

“Reddo had a couple of bone spurs removed, which were causing a bit of stress in his tibia,” he said.

“He’ll be in a boot for a couple of weeks now to de-load the bone. He’ll start running in 6-8 weeks.

“He won’t be back this year, but will be ready and firing for the pre-season.”

In better news, Daniel Rich is “ahead of schedule” with his recovery from a knee reconstruction, and should be fine to participate in most of the team’s 2015 pre-season program.

“Richy’s flying at the moment. He’s doing plenty of hiking and road riding,” Hass said.

“He ticked off his strength measures, therefore can begin his running.”
