Daniel Merrett and Matt Maguire will undergo surgery once the Brisbane Lions’ 2014 campaign comes to a close, to clean up minor ailments ahead of next season.

Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton, of the Bupa Recovery Team, said the pair’s respective injuries weren’t anything serious and wouldn’t hinder their 2015 pre-season preparations.

“Goose will go in for an ankle clean-up,” Burton told LionsTV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

“Daniel Merrett will go in for a knee and ankle – they be a couple of weeks apart.

“Both those (surgeries) are minor clean-ups, so they’ll be back for a full pre-season.”

Merrett and Maguire aren’t the only sore Lions, with Burton revealing a number of others have pulled up sore from Sunday’s tough encounter with Fremantle at the Gabba.

“We’ve got a few players in doubt, so we’ll see how they go on Thursday and confirm after that,” he said.

One player in line for selection in the final Lions team for 2014 is ruckman Matthew Leuenberger, who starred for the Reserves in Sydney on Saturday.

Leuenberger hasn’t played a senior match since injuring his knee against Port Adelaide in Round 4 earlier this season, and will be keen to finish his campaign strongly.

“He’s available. He played really well from all reports. He kicked four goals and was pretty dominant in the ruck. He’ll be up for selection this week.”
