Danny Daly is no stranger to coaching at AFL level, having spent the past decade in a variety of roles with Collingwood, North Melbourne and Richmond.

Having worked closely with Daly during his tenure at the Tigers, Brisbane Lions Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch lured Daly up north in a bid to help improve his young side’s work at stoppages – which proved to be a weakness for the Club in 2014.

As Stoppage Strategy Coach, Daly will combine resources with one of the best midfielders of the modern game, Simon Black, to ensure the Lions are well equipped in the ‘engine room’.

“I’m really excited to be working with Blacky, who’s doing the midfield, on our stoppages and spread,” Daly told Lions TV.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do in that area.”

The Lions not only bolstered their midfield coaching resources over the off-season, but also injected some ready-made recruits who could make an immediate impact.

“Bringing in Beamsy, (Mitch) Robinson, and also Allen (Christensen) will really help us, but also developing the younger kids like Aishy in his second year, and Rohan Bewick,” Daly said.

“We also get Leuenberger back, and with Rockliff, Zorko and Redden, it’s a pretty good midfield we’ve got there.

“The main thing for me is just getting the guys to play their roles and doing the right things by their teammates.”

Since his appointment in September, Daly has been eager to get to work in Brisbane under Leppitsch.

“The hardest part has been the time I’ve had to wait to get over here to be honest. When Leppa offered me the job back in September, I wanted to get on board and get stuck into it straight away,” he said.

“I’ve been into it two weeks now and am loving it. I love working with the coaches and the players.

“It’s going to be a bit different given (Leppitsch) was a fellow Assistant (Coach) at Richmond and we used to joke around quite a bit. But now he’s the main man I’ve probably got to hold back a bit.

“He’s shown in his one year at Brisbane how far he’s come as a coach. I’m just looking forward to helping him and the Club become successful again.”
