The Brisbane Lions are having a bumpy ride at the moment, but the ultimate journey will be a good one, says Assistant Coach Danny Daly.

Daly said the Club’s young list – the Lions last weekend fielded the most inexperienced side in the League in terms of games played – had the talent to succeed and only needed to build up time at AFL level to see improved performances.

“You have to look at the big picture. We are on a journey and hopefully it’s a good journey for a few years,” Daly told the Vero Coaches Wrap.

“We just have to continue playing the likes of Harris Andrews and Dan McStay down forward – we know that we’ll get parts of the game where they get out-marked or out-muscled because of their weight, but if we can get 20 games into them this year and another 20 next year then it builds a great future for the Footy Club in the forward line.

“Obviously down back we have Gardiner and Clarke and Paparone and we saw on the weekend that they were out-marked at times but again we just have to be able to cop that at the minute and get games into them and experience, and make sure that they can halve contests.

“I thought Clarkey did a great job on Kennedy last week keeping him to three goals and the more confidence we can get in these kids then the better it will be building for the future.”

In the short term, Daly said improvement in on-field performance would come from the team playing better for longer.

“The main thing we talked about after the game was the ability of the boys to play the game for 120 minutes,” he said.

“There were periods of the game where we dropped our intensity and let West Coast dictate the game through contested possession and their ball movement – we just have to get better as a playing group in regards to our intensity for a full game.

“If we make mistakes doing what we want to do then we’ll cop that as a young group but at the end of the day if we keep doing it for longer in games and across the season then we’ll get rewards for it.”
