The Brisbane Lions have expressed shock, sadness and sympathy to the family and friends of Phil Walsh in the wake of his death early today.

Walsh played 60 Senior games for the Brisbane Bears from 1987-90, kicking 18 goals, and was the Club’s inaugural Best and Fairest winner in 1987.

Walsh had 31 possessions and polled the Club’s first-ever Brownlow Medal vote in the Bear’s inaugural Premiership game, the 33-point win over North Melbourne at the MCG.

Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann said Walsh’s death had shocked all at the Club and across the AFL.

“Phil holds a really important place in the history of our football Club and his death comes as an incredible shock to us all,” said Swann.

“He was a bloke with an incredible passion for the game and he had a positive impact on the lives of countless people across the code.

“The Crows played at the Gabba last weekend and the team’s ability to win that game from a difficult position was a direct reflection on Phil’s ability to get the best out of his team, even when times were tough.

“He will be greatly missed by all in the AFL and we pass on our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all at the Adelaide Football Club.”
