Lions Senior Assistant Coach Danny Daly assesses Sunday’s final NAB Challenge Match against GWS for the Vero Coaches Wrap.

“There was some good stuff to come out of the game on the weekend,” Daly said.

“The first one for those who were down there or watched on the telly was the first quarter, was we kicked one super goal, three goals, three behinds for 30 points which was a terrific start to the game.

“A lot of that was based off our ability to win the footy back in our forward half from turnovers.”

On Daniel Rich:

“Obviously, last year coming off a knee reconstruction - Richy had 28 possessions for the game 16 of those contested, he also had 10 inside 50s and 10 score involvements.

“He’s been training in the midfield throughout the whole pre-season. He’ll probably play 90% of his time through the midfield.

“He actually had five centre bounce clearances for the game. His ability to read the play; we all know he has a beautiful kick on him, and his ability to work through the lines as a midfielder and get that ball into our forwards is going to be crucial for us in 2016.”

On Ryan Bastinac:

“It was his first game for the Club – he had 22 possessions, 10 contested, six tackles and four clearances. He’ll add to (Dayne) Beams and Rocky in there as well.

“Around stoppages his ability to play his role (is fantastic). He’s going to be a very important cog in the side for us. It’s what we brought him into the Club for; his ability to win contested football, his use of his hands and his smartness around the ground, he’s a beautiful kick of the football and gets the ball going our way.

On Defensive 50 Stoppages:

“Unfortunately with the good comes with some areas of improvement. These are areas we need to work on as we head into the season proper and especially against the West Coast Eagles in Round 1.

“Obviously being in charge of the stoppages and strategies I wasn’t too impressed with how we went on the weekend in this area of the ground. GWS scored 3.3 from forward 50 stoppages which isn’t ideal for us and it will be one area over the next 10 days we’ll be really focusing on.

“West Coast don’t score quite so easily from their forward 50 stoppages.”

On Contested Football:

“Contested footy was GWS 169 to Brisbane 149. We actually won the third quarter plus two and we were basically even at quarter time. Our second quarter we were minus 16 just through our hardness around ground. Particularly at stoppage we got beaten by about six at stoppage during the second quarter.

“Keep it in mind again it was our first real hit out of the season, we missed Mackay last week and we played a really young group against the Suns at Burpengary.”
