Reserves Coach Shane Woewodin gives lions.com.au his assessment of the weekend’s game against the Gold Coast SUNS.

“It was a fantastic night for our football club, particularly our NEAFL group to get our first win for the season.

“Gold Coast weren’t at full strength. They had a lot of players out, we understand that. But, it was a really good opportunity for our group to play the way we want to play and to continue to build on what we’d done the previous month and we got a positive result with how we played.

“The scoreboard reflected that. It was a great win but more pleasing to see more the fact of how we played offensively, we created some good habits defensively and things we’ve been working around stoppage and structure went really well also and we were able to score off the back of that too.

“We scored 60 points from stoppage which was our highest for the year. It hasn’t been a great strength of ours throughout the year so to do that was pleasing.

“Again, we kicked 100 points which was a great result. It was a good opportunity for our players to build some confidence, get their hands on the ball, for the forwards to kick some goals also with Liam, Eric and Josh also able to bag multiples (goals).

“To sing the song – the boys haven’t sung the song since the end of last year. It put a smile on their face to get back to that winning feeling.

“Parts of our ball movement was really good too. Scotty Borlace who runs that division will be excited by seeing some of the change we were able to create from our back half. We scored almost 40 points from our back half so it was a really pleasing result.

“There are still a couple of work ons, particularly in our front half but at the end of the day we’ll take the four points and move on pretty quickly. It was good to get the win.

“Going forward – we have Canberra in Canberra this weekend. It wasn’t a happy hunting ground for us in 2015 with a loss down there.

“We’ll be looking to rectify that. We’ve got some players into form. Hopefully we’ll see some selection opportunities this weekend against Carlton – they can only put their best foot forward by doing that.”
