Exciting Brisbane Lions Women's player Kate McCarthy has suffered a minor setback after breaking her nose at training.

The 23-year-old is currently completing a modified pre-season programme as she recovers from a training mishap.

“I broke my nose at training last week – we were doing a drill. There was a little bit of contest involved. I went up as a defender to spoil, Sharni Webb came up and clocked me with her elbow.

“It probably looks worse than it is. I have a little bit of a headache, but hopefully I will return to training on Wednesday evening.”

Head of Medical Miranda O’Hara said while McCarthy is recovering well, she won’t be rushed back to full training.

“Fortunately she’ll be able to do most of the training, but she can’t have any contact,” O’Hara said.

“We’re going to wait until she sees the specialist tomorrow morning to be guided by when she can return to full training.”

Kate McCarthy is excited about the prospect of playing AFL in the inaugural Brisbane Lions' Women's Team.

The ex-Australian touch player, who is known for her lightning fast speed, said:

“The girls have gelled really well together as a team. We’re really excited to be out there. We’ve got a couple more weeks together until Christmas – so hopefully we can hit that hard and come back after the break and go again."
