Daniel McStay is one of the Lions' most imposing players and over the off-season, the 21-year-old has been focused on adding even more bulk to his frame.

McStay’s 2016 season was cut short in Round 17 when he fractured his ankle in a game against GWS. After a long period of rehabilitation, he is looking forward to making a big impact in 2017.

“I stayed behind about a month after the season finished and worked really closely with Selwyn our rehab coordinator,” said McStay.

“I’ve put on about 8 kilos post-surgery. I lost a bit (after surgery) but in terms of my actual playing weight, I’ve put on about 4 kilos since.”

McStay completed his first full on-ground running session yesterday at Yeronga.

“A few weeks ago I ran on ground and didn’t get through the session fully so I tried again yesterday and got through pretty successfully.

“I felt like I ran pretty well.

“From here I’m just going to keep progressing, get some more high speed metres in, and hopefully by the end of the year I will be back in full training.

Used predominately in a swingman role for the first part of his career, McStay spent the majority of the 2016 season in defence but is hopeful of a return to the forward line:

“I think that’s where I’ll start training once I move into full training. (It'll be good to) work pretty closely with Hippy (Eric Hipwood) and (Josh) Schache.”
