In this week’s Throwback Thursday we go back to Round 3, 2002 when the Lions were too strong for Essendon at the Gabba.

With Brisbane hoping to make it back-to-back premierships, a strong start to the season was needed to cement their position as competition favourites.

Daniel Bradshaw booted an impressive six goals, while Jason Akermanis slotted in four of his own, helping the Lions to a 50-point victory. Seasoned player Nigel Lappin had 31 touches, only to be out done by James Hird on the night.

A strong last quarter by the Lions spoiled Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy’s 500th game, while giving the home team a dream start to the season.
