The Brisbane Lions have sewn up their backline with three players committing to the Lions for AFLW 2018.

Defenders Leah Kaslar, Shannon Campbell and Kate Lutkins have all re-signed with the Club.

Kaslar, recruited from the Coolangatta Bluebirds, quickly became a mainstay in the Lions’ defence, and at 31 is one of Brisbane’s most experienced players.

She was awarded the Most Competitive Player at the Lions’ Best and Fairest Awards in April.

Brisbane Lions Women’s CEO Breeanna Brock said it was a major coup for the Lions to hold onto a player of Kaslar’s talent.

“We’re really pleased she has committed to the Club,” said Brock.

“Leah was phenomenal all year. Her ability to shut down the oppositions key player in the forward line was exceptional. We’re really excited about what next season will bring.”

A bold selection move by Coach Craig Starcevich saw Shannon Campbell discover her spot in the Lions’ inaugural AFL Women’s team from the other side of the world.

Campbell, who was on a soccer scholarship in America, joined the Club and quickly made an impact. She made history kicking the Lions’ first goal against Melbourne in Round one of the competition.

“Shannon is super competitive – she had a terrific first season. We couldn’t be happier that she has signed on,” said Brock.

Recruited from Wilston Grange, Kate Lutkins became a general down back for the Lions.

The Defence Force driver was commended for her ability to balance everyday work life with her football, which saw her take out the Most Courageous player award at the Lions’ Best and Fairest.

“Kate has worked really hard to balance her work life in the Defence Force and playing in the AFLW.  She’s a gutsy player, who has the ability to work off her opponent and to lay a game saving tackle or spoil. It’s fantastic that she has re-signed with the Club.”
