NEAFL Wrap: Round 8 Paul Henriksen Wraps up the NEAFL Lions 1 point win over GWS.

Development Coach Paul Henriksen said the Lions’ NEAFL side learnt some invaluable lessons in their one-point win over GWS last Saturday.

Having lost their past two matches, the Lions were in need of a win on the road against the Giants.

Scores were level at the 28-minute mark of the final term, but when Josh Schache goaled, a rushed behind moments later sealed a 11.12 (78) to 11.11 (77) victory.

“It’s really important that you learn how to win in those situations,” said Henriksen.

“In the previous game against Redland we had our opportunities to win. We didn’t get over the line then, but this week was a really important area of growth that we learnt how to win.

“We weren’t playing all that well but to get over the line was a good effort from the boys.”

Ryan Bastinac collected 35 disposals and six clearances, while Rhys Mathieson had 30 touches, nine clearances and a goal.

“Ryan Bastinac and Rhys Mathieson were the prime movers in the midfield with over 30 possessions,” said Henriksen.

“Jono Freeman down forward was exciting – he kicked 4.2 on Saturday and Matt Eagles stood up at full back with Jack Frost being out with concussion.”

Brisbane maintains third place on the ladder after the win and will face Aspley at Graham Road on Saturday.

“We’re prepared for a strong contest out at Graham Road. We’re looking forward to that challenge again and hopefully having a victory before the bye.”
