A win in the west is a huge achievement no matter where you sit on the ladder, according to Brisbane Lions Ruck and Midfield Assistant Coach Ben Hudson.

The Club’s dominant nine-goal win against Fremantle on Sunday was their first win in Perth since 2010.

“I think we went away as a group and had a really clear focus and got the job done,” Hudson said.

“Any win, regardless of where you are on the ladder, over in the west is a terrific result.”

Hudson said the next few weeks will determine how much of a confidence boost the win was. It also marked the Club’s first quarter-time lead for the season.

“A clear objective, it’s been a focus in previous weeks to break the hoodoo,” Hudson said.

“We were able to do that by just playing Lions football.

“It was the first time this year we were able to win all four quarters.”

Hudson believes this was down to forward half pressure, which came from the midfielders ability to win the contested ball. This gave the forwards plenty of opportunities inside 50.

“Scores were at 58% every time we went in there so it was another really good achievement and hopefully we can continue to achieve that,” he said.

The afternoon was a huge occasion for Stefan Martin, the Lions' ruckman, who celebrated 150 AFL games.

“In the lead up to it he spoke very passionately about how much he loves playing for the Club,” Hudson said.

“He’s been in great form himself, along with Big O who’s coming forward in leaps and bounds.”

Meanwhile, draftee Cameron Rayner was awarded a Rising Star nomination for his efforts.

“Cam’s been really terrific.”

“He’s a great man, like Charlie, a great guy to have around the Club.”

This weekend the Lions prepare to take on the Blues.

“Similar to us, they probably haven’t had the wins on the board, but certainly their last month has been really consistent.”
