The Brisbane Lions have selected midfielder Jacqui Yorston with Pick No. 71 at the 2018 AFL Women’s Draft.

A stellar year in the QWAFL saw Yorston claim her first senior women’s premiership for the Wilston Grange Gorillas.

Yorston also had a promising Under 18 National Championships campaign, with her precise kicking and tackling pressure pivotal in Queensland’s first victory against Victoria Metro earlier this year.

Her ability to extract the ball out of tight contests, create space and match up against the bigger bodies was impressive throughout her 2018 campaign.

Yorston juggled both Aussie Rules and Queensland representative netball, before deciding to pursue her football dreams instead at age 15.

Her decision paid dividends as she built an impressive list of achievements, including captaining the Metro North Under-17 squad three years in a row and taking home two club Best and Fairest awards.

More recently, Yorston was named in the 2018 Under-18 All Australian squad.

In 2018, the 17-year-old had her first taste of AFLW when she played in the Lions’ undefeated Winter Series team. She was also invited to test at the 2018 AFLW Draft Combine last month.

Coaches Comment – Craig Starcevich

“Jacqui is an inside midfielder. She’s not adverse to getting in and getting her own ball at ground level.

“She’s quite strong and also distributes well out of congestion which is an attribute that will help our midfield."

Welcome to the Den, Jacqui!
