Western Australian junior McKenzie Dowrick will play for the Brisbane Lions in 2019 after the Lions selected the exciting defender with Pick No. 33 at today’s NAB AFL Women’s Draft.

The Lions were delighted a player of Dowrick’s ilk would nominate Queensland for this year’s draft and were quick to reward her with a spot on their list.

The 18-year-old was a member of the AFL Women’s Academy and dominated at half back in this year’s Under 18 Championships for Western Australia.

Her accurate left boot, slinky skills and clever ball use set her apart from the competition. At the conclusion of the tournament she was named as an All Australian.

Dowrick grew up in a small town called Kambalda in Western Australia and played for the Mines Rovers as a junior.

Coaches Comment – Craig Starcevich

“We’ve been really lucky that McKenzie’s nominated for Queensland and put herself up to be drafted by the Brisbane Lions, which is great for our team.

“She’s a terrific reader of the play at half back. She can intercept really well. When she gets her hands on it she’s got a booming left foot kick. But also she’s got enough finesse with her kick to hit up short targets as well.

“We would love to see her as a medium sized midfielder at some point, so she can get into the midfield and help with that part of the ground as well.

“She’s an accomplished player, just reads the game so well and almost looks effortless at times.”

Welcome to the den, McKenzie!
