Jarryd Lyons ready to be #Uncaged

Welcome to Brisbane, Lyons Jarryd Lyons will join his brother Corey at the Brisbane Lions. Here are some of his highlights from his time at the Gold Coast Suns.

The Brisbane Lions are thrilled to land the signature of delisted free agent Jarryd Lyons, who arrives at the Den from the Gold Coast Suns.

Lyons will significantly boost the Club’s midfield group, as he has proved himself to be excellent in clearance work.

The 26-year-old’s game style and age bracket compliments the Lions’ trade strategy of acquiring 23-26 year-old midfielders with exceptional hands.

The Lions worked with the Suns to start conversations with Lyons as they felt he could help grow their midfield and assist the young, emerging group, while also developing his own game.

Lyons comes to the Lions on the first day of AFL Delisted Player Free Agency Period after being delisted by the Suns yesterday.

In 2018 Lyons played 19 AFL games for the Suns and was top of his team for clearances and contested possessions, while averaging 25 disposals a game.

This season he was ranked third overall for clearances in the competition and ninth for contested possessions.

Lyons played 37 games in his two years at the Suns and had previously spent four seasons at the Adelaide Crows where he played 55 games.

His younger brother Corey has been playing for the Lions NEAFL side over the past two years and will be pushing to make his AFL debut in 2019.

General Manager of Football David Noble said it was fantastic to welcome another Lyons into the pride.

“To be able to land a player of Jarryd’s status to our group post the trade period is a great credit to our Club,” he said.

“Jarryd brings a level of maturity in his game to our Club that will complement what we are putting together both in the midfield and forward lines.

“He certainly fits the strategy we have executed in the last 12 months of age and culture fit.

“His overhead marking is a skill that seems to get underestimated at times, so his capacity to be able to go forward is an option we think will allow us further flexibility.

“Jarryd is entering an exciting personal time of his life, when he marries his fiancé Savahna tomorrow. We look forward to welcoming them to our Club and assisting them on their new life’s journey.

The Brisbane Lions 2019 Membership campaign will be unveiled Monday 5 November at 10am.
