Ely Smith: 187cm, 86kg 13/09/00

  • Murray Bushrangers junior
  • Midfielder
  • Agile, big bodied player who tested well at the AFL Combine

Steve Conole, Recruiting Manager, says:

“Ely is a big-bodied midfielder who has had a fantastic second half of the year playing for Vic Country."

“He is competitive and strong around the ball and will boost our midfield group.

“Ely has a very strong athletic make-up which will bode well for him as he progresses through the AFL system.”

The Brisbane Lions have selected Ely Smith with Pick No. 21 at the 2018 NAB AFL Draft.

Smith earned his selection after strong performances for Vic Country at the Under 18 National Championships and the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup competition.

At 187cm he is an agile, powerful, explosive ball winner, at home in the midfield.

Smith caught the eye of recruiters after producing outstanding results at the 2018 AFL Draft Combine.

The 18-year-old finished first in the standing vertical jump, reaching 77cm and scored highly in the vertical jump on both his left and right foot. He is also an accurate kick after scoring highly in the kicking test.

The Lions held Pick No. 18 at the start of the night but it shifted back three spots following Academy bid matches by other clubs.

Welcome, Ely!
