Paige Parker’s dedication to her dream of one day playing AFLW has paid off, after being named in the Brisbane Lions team to take on GWS in Round 1.

Parker is one of five debutants set to run out for the mighty maroon, blue and gold for the first time.

Parker’s story is one of resilience, having spent two years with the Lions in their train-on squad before she finally got her chance.

Coach Craig Starcevich said Parker’s spot was hard-earned and he hopes she takes full advantage this weekend.

“Paige provides us a lot of rebound run to our game,” he said.

Joining Parker is Lauren Bella, who has been named in the Lions' interchange

The 18-years-old ruckwoman hails from the small North Queensland town Sarina.

“Lauren is only young but she’s already a pretty accomplished ruckman with plenty still to learn,” he said.

“She’s been exciting in all of our games and is very competitive at stoppages. “

Her namesake Lauren Arnell will also play her first game for the Lions, after eleven senior games for Carlton. She is clever with her ball use and has playing well in practice matches.

“Lauren has slotted into the group with the enthusiasm we thought should would,” Starcevich said.

Jesse Wardlaw, who is still relatively new to footy, will make her debut, playing in the forward line.

Her hard work-ethic and thirst for knowledge impressed Starcevich.

“Jesse is a developing tall and provides a good target for us up forward,” he said.

“She works really hard and presents herself well to midfielders.”

Western Australian McKenzie Dowrick is the fifth Lions AFLW player to make their debut this weekend. The strong left booter is versatile across the field.

“McKenzie has played a lot of positions over her career as a junior,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing what she will bring against GWS this weekend.”
