While the Brisbane Lions Reserves players will no doubt still be celebrating their first State League Premiership in 11 years, another challenge awaits them this Saturday in Canberra.

The Lions’ Northern Conference triumph has earned them the right to play off in the NEAFL inter-conference Championship match against Eastern Conference Premiers, Queanbeyan.

Like the Lions, Queanbeyan clinched their first local title in 12 years after defeating the Sydney Swans Reserves by 30 points at Manuka Oval on Sunday.

The two teams will now meet this Saturday 22 September (starting at 11:30am) in what will prove a fitting conclusion to the 2012 NEAFL season.

With both sides already taking home the silverware from their respective competitions, the finale will serve to prove which conference is stronger.

AFL National Second Tier Manager Simon Laughton congratulated Queanbeyan and the Lions on their efforts in reaching the championship match and said that the NEAFL is continuing to improve the standard, profile and professionalism of second tier football in the Northern markets.

“A key focus of the NEAFL is to provide a pathway for young talented players to get drafted,” Laughton said.

“Last year it was pleasing to have 11 players added to AFL lists, including four mature age players and we are hoping that a similar number will again be picked up at the draft later this year.”
