Stefan Martin fell just short of equalling the Brisbane Football Club’s all-time record for most ruck hit-outs in a game on Sunday.

Martin’s 51 hit-outs against Port Adelaide in Adelaide was a personal best by one and fell just one hit-out short of Matthew Leuenberger’s club record of 52 set against Gold Coast at the Gabba in 2011.

It was the fourth time in the combined Bears/Lions history that a Brisbane player has had 50 or more hit-outs in a game.

Leuenberger also had 51 hit-outs in Round 15 last year against Fremantle at Subiaco, when Dockers counterpart Aaron Sandilands had 53.

And Martin had 50 hit-outs in the last game of last year against the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba.

Martin, with 189 hit-outs in seven games this year, ranks ninth in the AFL behind Melbourne’s Max Gawn (288), North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein (255), West Coast’s Nic Naitanui (240), Adelaide’s Sam Jacobs (236), St Kilda’s Tom Hickey (222), GWS’s Shane Mumford (221), Sydney’s Kurt Tippett (195) and Essendon’s Leuenberger (191).

Martin’s 189 hit-outs this year has given him a total of 1169 hit-outs in 44 games for Brisbane and made him the sixth player in Brisbane history to top 1000.

Leuenberger (2472) leads the club all-time from Jamie Charman (2291), Matthew Clarke (2103), Clark Keating (1915) and Beau McDonald (1577).

Leuenberger has topped 40 hit-outs in a game seven time (including his two 50’s), while Martin has topped 40 five times (including his two 50’s).

Clarke had three games in excess of 40 and McDonald one.
