LIONS defender Darcy Gardiner has been charged with engaging in rough conduct against Carlton captain, Marc Murphy, during the first quarter of Sunday’s win over the Blues.

Gardiner’s sanction was based on the video evidence available and a medical report provided by Carlton Football Club. The view of the match review panel was that the incident should be classified as careless conduct with low impact to the body. The offence was classified as a $1500 sanction. Gardiner has no prior record. He can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Following this, Lions captain Tom Rockliff, Dayne and Claye Beams and Gardiner were charged with a first offence for engaging in a melee at half time. A first offence for engaging in a melee is classified as a $1500 sanction. An early plea can reduce the penalty to a $1000.

Carlton’s Mark Whiley, Patrick Cripps, and Clem Smith have also been charged for the melee. An early plea will reduce their penalty to a $1000 sanction.
