It didn’t take Brisbane Lions draftee Sam Mayes long to overcome his initial nerves and start directing his attention to the beginning of his AFL career.

Mayes, who was taken with the Club’s first round selection (Pick No.8 overall), will fly to Brisbane on Sunday in readiness for his first training session on Monday.

The young South Australian said he was looking forward to meeting his new teammates.

“The footy boots will be the first thing that I pack,” Mayes said.

“I’m pretty excited about getting started up there on Monday. I’ve got the likes of Jonathan Brown and Simon Black to play alongside. They’re such great players and can take a leaf out of their book about how to do things.”

“(The Lions) are pretty young at the moment, so it’s going to be exciting.”

Mayes said the occasion proved nerve-wracking for not only him, but also his parents who were left on the edge of their seat waiting to hear where there son would be heading.

“I’ve relaxed a bit now, but the nerves beforehand were very large. I’m a bit relieved now,” Mayes said.

“Mum and Dad came along with me and I shed a tear with them earlier. It’s always good to share the moment with them.”

“I think it will sink in more when I make the move up.”
