Ever since Sam Mayes was drafted to the Brisbane Lions last November, fans have been eagerly anticipating the highly-rated teenager’s first official game in Club colours.

And none were left disappointed after witnessing the Club’s prized first-round draftee’s stunning debut performance against the Gold Coast Suns in QClash 5.

Mayes was among the team’s best players in the nail-biting two-point win, and finished with 21 disposals (at 81% efficiency), a team-high 10 marks, five inside 50s, and 95 Dream Team points.

But more importantly, he helped deliver the Lions’ first win of the 2013 season.

“It was great that the boys got the gutsy two-point win in the end,” Mayes told LIONS TV after the game.

“We really toughed it out in the last quarter, so I guess that shows good character within the group.”

The humble 18 year-old praised his teammates for helping get him into the game.

“I worked hard, but it’s a credit to the other boys because they give you the footy in the end,” he said.
