The odds might be heavily stacked against the Brisbane Lions for their season opener against Hawthorn this Saturday, but the opening weekend of Round 1 proved that anything can happen…

Very few people predicted that Greater Western Sydney would go on to defeat cross-town rivals the Sydney Swans last Saturday at Spotless Stadium in what is already being labelled as the ‘upset of the season’.

To a lesser extent, Gold Coast’s brave victory over top-four fancies Richmond, despite being two men short after half-time, has also been a hot topic of discussion among the football world.

The results could bode well for the Lions, who have been given little to no chance by media experts of toppling the reigning premiers.

And while those outside the Club are welcome to their opinion, they certainly aren’t shared within the Gabba.

Lions forward Dayne Zorko said the performances from the AFL’s two newest franchises were a glowing endorsement of just what’s possible in a two-horse race.

“Both sides went in as underdogs on Saturday night and came out on top so we can absolutely get something out of it,” Zorko told The Courier Mail on Sunday.

“We will be in the same situation next weekend. If we can apply pressure, create turnovers and make the most of our opportunities we can also give ourselves a chance.

“The competition is only getting more even. If a good team is even slightly off on any given day, the other side can knock them over if they apply enough pressure.”
