A five-goal haul from Co-Captain Jonathan Brown proved the difference in last Saturday’s night’s thrilling two-point QClash triumph.

After managing just one goal from his opening two matches, Brown led from the front in wet and slippery conditions not generally conducive to big power forwards.

Assistant Coach Mark Harvey was pleased with the skipper’s output, but said it further highlighted the Lions’ need to find another goal-kicking target to help shoulder the load in attack.

“It’s really important that your Captain plays well in those sorts of games, and (Brown) was a big part of the voice in the lead-up to that week,” Harvey told LIONS TV as part of Vero Coaches’ Wrap.

“He also needs an ally down there to help him out, and we’re constantly trying to find that as a coaching staff.”

Stefan Martin has been Brown’s main ‘ally’ in attack so far this season, while Aaron Cornelius and, more recently, Niall McKeever have also played alongside the three-time Club Champion.

Jordan Lisle is yet to play a senior game in 2013, but could prove another option given his recent form in front of goals with the Reserves’ side.

While Brown’s performance was duly recognised with the Marcus Ashcroft Medal, Harvey believed Lions debutant Sam Mayes was equally as impressive.

“I though (Mayes) acquitted himself really well, and we look forward to his continued advancement,” Harvey said.

“I think that comes from the fact that he’s played two years of senior football in South Australia. So he’s played against men.”

“He gave us some real direction and drive off the wing.”

“However, his challenge is next week – and the coming weeks – because the opposition are going to know a bit more about him.”

Mayes was overlooked for the AFL’s Round 3 Rising Star nomination, with Hawthorn’s Jed Anderson receiving the honour.
