Brisbane Lions star Simon Black says he still has the passion to play on in 2014, but is unsure how his body would cope with a 17th AFL season.

Black told The Courier Mail on Friday that mentally, he is as ready as ever.

“I still feel really excited about footy. As excited as I've ever been,” Black said.

“I'd love to play on because you are a long time retired.

“I didn't play a lot of games this year so there’s no doubt that has an impact mentally. I still feel pretty fresh. The mind is willing but I just have to weigh up how my body will go.

“(The surgeons) found a bit going on in one knee but it wasn't too bad. It's just a matter of whether or not they will hold up.”

Black is expected to meet with new Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch again in the coming days to discuss his options.

The 2002 Brownlow Medallist understands that a decision needs to be made soon so that the Club can continue their list management planning for next season.

“The club needs to know what I'm doing soon, which is fair enough. I have to make up my mind in the next week or so,” Black said.

Black has previously spoken of his desire to dip his toe into coaching post-retirement, and has already been sounded out by the Sydney Swans for a potential coaching position.

Should Black hang up the boots, it’s likely that the Lions would also present him with some off-field options.

But the Brisbane games record-holder is yet to make a final call on what he’ll be doing in 2014.
