Despite AFL boss Andrew Demetriou claiming that State of Origin would be forever consigned to football history, there is still plenty of support from the players to bring back the popular concept.

Lions forward Josh Green is the latest player to express his desire to represent his home State of Tasmania in a State of Origin match.

“I would love to see State of Origin footy back (in the AFL),” Green told fans during a live chat on Thursday.

“To play for Tassie would be great!”

Green is one of three Tasmanians currently on the Lions’ list – together with Ryan Harwood and Aaron Cornelius.

Hypothetically, if State of Origin was to ever return, the Lions trio could help form part of a side along with Jack Riewoldt (Richmond) Jeremy Howe (Melbourne), Mitch Robinson (Carlton), Grant Birchall (Hawthorn), to name a few.

Green has kicked four goals in his three matches so far this season, which ranks him equal second on the Club’s goal-kicking list behind Jonathan Brown (six goals).

The 177cm goal-sneak has now established himself in the senior side, and along with teammate Dayne Zorko (175cm) is proof that size doesn’t always matter.

“I got told all the time that I was too small to play AFL,” Green said. “But that just made me want to play even more.”

“I certainly think there will always be a place for ‘traditional’ footballers (in the AFL).”
