The AFL has today advised of an update to the fixture for Round Two of the 2022 NAB AFL Women’s competition after multiple players from the Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs AFLW programs entered AFL Health and Safety Protocols this week.
The Brisbane Lions fixtured match against Carlton on Saturday 15 January will not proceed as planned.
The AFL is now working closely with the Lions and the Western Bulldogs, who have also been affected, to fixture a match between the two clubs as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.
Brisbane Lions Head of Women’s Football, Breeanna Brock, said it was an unfortunate outcome but that the team were looking forward to playing out the remainder of the season when safe to do so.
“We’ve taken every precaution that we could but unfortunately we too have been impacted by the ongoing pandemic.
“We’re devastated that we can’t play this weekend, we were so looking forward to our first home game at Maroochydore and unfurling that Premiership flag.
“Our focus now switches to the health and welfare of our playing group and ensuring that we’re able to get everybody through this and can play as soon as is safely possible."
Brock said the playing group was upbeat despite the setback.
“The team has a really positive outlook and are now looking forward to the remainder of the season.
“We’ll continue to adhere to Government health and safety protocols with the safety of our community always at the forefront of our minds.”
Ticketing Update
For supporters who have purchased tickets to attend the Brisbane Lions vs. Carlton match at Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex, Ticketmaster will issue a refund. No action is required from the ticket purchaser.
The AFL is working closely with the Brisbane Lions and Western Bulldogs on a match between those clubs to be communicated as soon arrangements are finalised.
