Following a successful Winter Series, pre-season training for the Brisbane Lions' AFLW team will begin in mid-November.

One player the Lions will welcome back in 2019 is inspirational defender Sam Virgo, who missed the entire 2018 season after tearing her ACL.

"Sam is going really well. She has progressed through her ACL rehab quite seamlessly," AFLW High Performance Manager Matt Green told lions.com.au.

"She has been a very diligent worker and was involved with the team last year which helped with her morale.

"She is back to full training and running which is really positive heading into pre-season."

Rising star Sophie Conway will miss the 2019 season, after tearing her ACL in early July playing in Melbourne.

"It's very unfortunate for her. She's now had her operation and has been going really well."

"It's all going to plan. She's in the early stages of her rehab but it's all looking positive.

"She will integrate into pre-season in her own capacity. It will be really good to have her around the group in some capacity."

In good news, 2017 and 2018 AFLW Captain Emma Zielke is back running in her recovery from an ankle injury sustained in the Winter Series.

"She returned to running this week which was good."

"She is a very diligent worker and has been successful with her rehab.

"She will be ready for pre-season from day one."
