The Brisbane Lions have vaulted into favouritism for the NEAFL Premiership courtesy of a comprehensive 79-point win over Southport on Saturday.

The victory sees the Lions leapfrog the Sharks into top spot on the ladder after 13 rounds of a tightly-contested season.

It’s the Lions’ fourth win on the trot, and the comfortable margin maintains their percentage at an incredible 179.41%.

Barring a major stumble at the back end of the year, the Lions are now all-but-assured of a finals berth, with two games against second-last placed Mt Gravatt coming up.

Coach Nathan Clarke would have been especially pleased with his troops on Saturday, considering they were backing up from a gruelling clash with Gold Coast last weekend.

The 24.18 (162) to 13.5 (83) win was set up by a typically fast start from the Lions, who kicked seven goals to one in the first term to rattle the home team.

The Lions led by 40 points at half time, after both sides kicked half a dozen goals in the second quarter.

The margin blew out to 59 at the final change, and it was increased further to the eventual 79 via a four-goals-to-two last quarter.

For the majority of the afternoon the Lions had a mortgage on the Sherrin; pumping it inside 50 twenty times more than their opponents and doubling the Sharks’ possession quota.

The Lions had contributors across the board, with only four players registering less than 12 disposals (one of which was the injured Dave Cummins).

Claye Beams and Patrick Karnezis were tireless in collecting 28 and 33 touches respectively, Patrick Wearden (29 disposals) and Scott Clarke had probably their best games of the year, and Josh Dyson impressed with 25 possessions and three goals.

Aaron Cornelius plucked 11 marks and kicked five goals, Jordan Lisle and Dyson bagged three each, and Jared Polec kept his name firmly in the minds of senior selectors with four first-half goals.

Special mention must also go to 21-year-old Jesse O’Brien, who crashed in for a staggering 13 tackles, (the next best was six), in his return from a groin injury.

Pleasingly for coach Clarke, Todd Banfield also got through the game unscathed after six weeks on the sidelines.

The Lions Reserves next play Mt Gravatt at Sherwood 11:00am Sunday 1 July.
