The Brisbane Lions are excited to kickstart their 2024 AFL campaign by hosting a history-making ‘Opening Round’ blockbuster against Carlton at The Gabba.

In what will be a Preliminary Final re-match, the Lions will take on the Blues under lights on Friday 8 March at 6:50pm local time.

Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly said the Club was thrilled to be part of the AFL’s new initiative.

“I think it’s a great concept, and with the NRL heading over to America and Vegas it gives the opportunity for the AFL to stamp its authority in Queensland and New South Wales,” Daly said.

“Playing Carlton on a Friday night at a packed Gabba will be a great way to start the season for us, especially off the back of last year’s prelim.

“The atmosphere when we played Carlton in the Preliminary Final at The Gabba was unbelievable, and I imagine Opening Round will also have a finals-like feel.”

The full 2024 Toyota AFL Premiership Season fixture will be released on Thursday 16 November.

After being Grand Finalists this year, the Lions are anticipating a strong lineup of homes games at The Gabba, according to Daly.

“You would think, and we hope, that we get some pretty big games at The Gabba off the back off our performance not only this year but last year,” Daly said.

“As we saw last season The Gabba was sold out most games so it’s important to get your memberships early and get your seats booked.”

The eight teams that play in the Opening Round will then have a bye between Rounds 2 and 6, with all 18 teams in the competition having played the same number of games by the beginning of Round 7.
