For 13min10sec at the Gabba on Sunday Eric Hipwood was positively exhilarating. Four goals with four kicks inside 14 minutes in the third quarter to blow open the Brisbane Lions’ game against Melbourne.

It’s one of the most exciting features of AFL football when a big forward takes hold of a game and it certainly prompted a loud and enthusiastic response from a Gabba crowd of 24,809, the biggest for a game against Melbourne since 2010.

And when Hipwood kicked his fifth goal 1min26sec into the fourth quarter to push the Lions’ lead out to 20 points it was a sweet post-script to one of the great power-bursts.

It was a moment, too, for the statisticians.

Hipwood became the 10th Brisbane player to kick four or more goals in a quarter since the AFL started recording such detail in 2000, including two players who kicked five in a quarter,

Daniel Bradshaw sits at the top of the Brisbane power-burst list. He kicked five goals in a quarter twice and four goals in a quarter five times.

The other five-goal power-burst play came from an unlikely source – Daniel Merrett.

The long-time Lions fullback booted five goals in the first quarter of the Lions’ first game against the young GWS Giants at the Gabba in 2012, when he finished with seven goals in a 92-point win.

Jonathan Brown kicked four goals in a quarter six times including a power burst grand slam, doing so in each quarter at least once.

Seven players have kicked four goals in a quarter once – Alastair Lynch, Michael Voss, Jason Akermanis, Mitch Clark, Brendan Fevola, Dayne Beams and now Hipwood.

Hipwood’s second goal against the Demons on Saturday also earned him another line in the club’s statistical history as the 23rd player to kick 100 goals. And the second-youngest.

At 21 years 290 days the loping left-footer is younger than all but Bradshaw, who was 21/238.

Having reached 100 goals in his 66th game Hipwood is sixth-quickest in club history behind Lynch (48 games), Bradshaw (50), Jarrod Molloy (59), Brad Hardie (60), and Justin Leppitsch (63).

The 23 players to have kicked 100 goals for the club, in chronological order with full details, are:-

Interestingly, in a sign of how the game has changed, while 23 players have kicked 100 goals for Brisbane since 1987, including the ex-Fitzroy trio of Lynch, Molloy and Chris Johnson, only 42 players, including Lynch, kicked 100 goals for Fitzroy from 1897-1996. They were:-

The Lions’ win on Sunday was their sixth from seven games at the Gabba this season and ensures the club’s first winning home season since 2013.

It’s been a dramatic turnaround – from 2014-18 the Lions were 13-42 at the Gabba.

Zorko, who shared the AFLCA votes with Lachie Neale as best afield, collected a season-high 31 possessions, including a season-high 16 contested possessions, seven clearances and five tackles. And he kicked three goals

It was the 22nd time in his 158 games Zorko has had 30 or possessions, the 14th time he has kicked three goals or more, and the fourth time he has had 30 possessions and three goals in the same game.
