The Brisbane Lions confirm the Club has made changes to its coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season.

Daniel Lloyd has been promoted to assistant coach (forwards) after spending the past two years as a development coach with the Lions.

The Club has also appointed former Western Bulldogs defender Liam Jones and former Adelaide Crows midfielder Scott Thompson as development coaches.

Lloyd, who played 101 AFL games with GWS before retiring and starting his coaching career with the Lions, replaces Stuart Dew as forwards coach.

The 33-year said he was grateful to the Club for providing him the opportunity as he also gave an insight into his coaching style.

“I am excited for the challenge and looking forward to getting to work with a great group of coaches and players,” Lloyd said.

“I think only being out of the game for a couple of years will help me in ways, as I feel I have a good understanding of today’s game.

“The AFL season is very demanding, and players face many challenges, so I can share my experience and hopefully help them through.

“And I think for me the way I coach is no different to the way I played the game. I build strong relationships with the players and understand who they are and what they bring to the team.

“Then we put the work in together to get the best out of not only them as an individual but us as a forward line and as a team.”

The Club is also excited to bolster its coaching group with the arrival of Jones and Thompson as development coaches.

Thompson started his coaching career in 2017 as a development coach with Port Adelaide after 308 games as a player with Melbourne and Adelaide.

Following a break from coaching at AFL level, Thompson went and coached Unley Mercedes Jets in Division 2 of the Adelaide Football League.

While Jones, who played 205 with Carlton and the Western Bulldogs, will start his coaching journey with the Lions.

The Club sees the 34-year-old as being another good fit in the development space due to being fresh off the Western Bulldogs AFL list this season.

Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly said the Club was thrilled by all three appointments.

“We are very fortunate to have Daniel, Liam and Scott all be part of our coaching staff as they are very knowledgeable and quality people,” Daly said.

“Daniel’s promotion to assistant coach is a great reward for the hard work he has put in the past two years.

“We are also really looking forward to having Liam and Scott join our Club as they both have invaluable experience to offer, and we also welcome their families to the Brisbane Lions.”

The Club will announce its full coaching and football department staff in the coming weeks.
