The Brisbane Lions, in partnership with Principal Partner Youi and AFL Queensland, returned to Cherbourg on Tuesday with AFLW players Jade Ellenger and Shanae Davison delivering a School Holiday Auskick clinic for local kids for a day of football, connection and celebration.

The visit builds on last year’s Youi Guernsey Swap, which saw more than 100 Lions and Youi staff travel from Springfield and Sippy Downs, reinforcing the partners shared commitment to continued support for the Cherbourg community.

As part of that visit, the Lions, Youi and AFL Queensland partnered to deliver a new set of goals posts on the town’s main oval, which have been well used by the community of all ages.

AFLW player Jade Ellenger said genuine relationships were at the heart of the Lions’ community work.

“Being present in community and spending time with young people in places like Cherbourg is incredibly important to us,” Ellenger said.

“It’s about connection, shared experiences and showing young people that they are supported and capable of achieving great things.

“If our visit can expand the opportunities for young kids to get involved in sport and inspire them to follow their dreams, if that’s AFL or education or something else, then we’re having a positive impact."

Regular Auskick sessions also continue throughout Terms 1, 2 and 3 at Cherbourg State School.

Youi and the Lions have worked closely to deepen engagement within the Cherbourg community, going beyond participation through Youi’s investment in the Lions Wellbeing program.

This support enabled the Lions to deliver resilience and mental wellbeing sessions for Year 7, 8 and 9 students at Murgon State High School in February and March this year.

Youi Head of Marketing & Communications, Dave Annesley said sustained engagement was key to create meaningful outcomes.

“Our partnership with the Brisbane Lions is about building long-term relationships with communities like Cherbourg,” Annesley said.

“Returning in 2026 allows us to continue building trust and creating a genuine, lasting impact.

“Youi and the Lions have a shared focus on strengthening cultural connection, creating opportunities for young people and delivering lasting impact in this community, and I thank the Mayor, Councillors and most importantly the community for their ongoing support.”

In July, members of the Cherbourg community will be invited to the Gabba during NAIDOC Week for the Round 18 match against Essendon, celebrating culture, community and the ongoing journey being shared together.
