The $12.8 million project will deliver a new two-storey sports pavilion which includes two female friendly change rooms, a first aid room, kiosk, social space and kitchen.

This will enable Fitzroy Football Club and Fitzroy Junior Football Club to host more training and games.

Fitzroy FC President, David Leydon, said the club was excited by the improvements being undertaken at Brunswick St Oval.

“We are very pleased to say that work has finally begun on the redevelopment of the historic Brunswick Street Oval, including permanent clubrooms for Fitzroy Football Club and the Fitzroy Juniors,” he said.

“The heritage grandstand will remain the centrepiece of the club's sacred home, while the new club rooms for Fitzroy will ensure a strong future as we continue to play at the top level of local footy in Melbourne.”

Earlier this year, the Brisbane Lions finalised a new multi-year sponsorship with Fitzroy FC to assist their football operations.

Fitzroy Football Club plays on the historic Brunswick Street Oval every week during the footy season and in 2026 will field eight teams – five men’s teams and three women’s sides.

The Senior Mens’ side lead the ladder in Premier C of the VAFA, with a 10-0 record and are worth a trip to Brunswick St Oval to cheer on.

The Senior Womens side are also having a good year, sitting in the top 4 of the Premier division of the VAFA.

Facilities in the historic Kevin Murray Stand are also having a facelift including upgrades to the public toilets, improved umpire changerooms, and new stairs.

The clubhouse will also be relocated and improved while external works will preserve the heritage status of the iconic building and bring it back to life.

The project, expected to be completed in late 2027, will deliver more energy-efficient lighting around the precinct as well as landscaping improvements.

The Brunswick Street Oval redevelopment is possible with support from the Victorian Government, Yarra City Council, the Australian Football League (AFL) and the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund.
