The Brisbane Lions are proud to showcase the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring to life everything the Club does both on and off the field.

As part of the series, the Club will highlight staff members from various departments—their roles, backgrounds, challenges, and advice—to give a snapshot of what it’s like to work for the Brisbane Lions.

Fresh off celebrating her 21st year as part of the Brisbane Lions pride, we sat down with Mon as she gave us insight into what it’s like to be a part of the Lions pride.

How long have you been at the Club and what roles have you been involved in over your time?

I've been with the Club for 21 years, starting in May 2005 as a match-day event coordinator. By 2008, I was Events Manager which evolved into Head of Events - adding Fundraising and Coteries to the mix. I’ve always been part of the Commercial team, and in January 2023, I stepped into the Head of Partnerships role, leading the team that looks after all our AFL, AFLW, Academy and Venue sponsors. More recently I have become Head of Commercial Operations, helping to deliver the Club’s commercial objectives, ensuring the smooth and effective operation of the commercial department.

What are a few of the best things about working at the Brisbane Lions?

The Club is like a big family where everyone has an emotional stake in the game. I love the people I work with and the excitement of match days.

Can you share a recent work achievement or project you’re proud of?

Being part of the Brisbane Lions’ inaugural AFLW season was unforgettable - we were building everything from scratch at community grounds, creating game days on the fly, and pitching in wherever needed. Watching the team make the very first Grand Final was emotional and incredible, no matter the result. Another standout was bringing Principal partner, Youi’s, ‘Scott’ campaign to life last year - an Australian first where they handed over their sponsorship to a superfan, Scott Villiers. It was so much fun and really rewarding.

What are some challenges of working in sport?

Working in sport keeps you on your toes - no two days are the same! One of the biggest challenges is that so much hinges on, on-field performance, which you can’t control (as much as you wish you could). Add in nights, weekends, and the AFL/AFLW crossover, and time management becomes your biggest strength. It's busy, unpredictable and totally worth it.

What are some lessons you’ve learnt during your time at the Club?

It’s so much more than just a job. Being part of a professional sporting club means you live every high and low with the team - it's an emotional rollercoaster! Luckily, I’ve always had an amazing group of people around me to share the ride and have a laugh, no matter the result.

If you could swap roles with anyone at the Brisbane Lions for a day, who would it be and why?

I think I’d give Jayden’s role as Property Manager a go. Game day can’t happen without him and his team handling the logistics, plus I love a good checklist. I don’t mind laundry either so that would be okay, but I’d be a terrible runner!

Favourite player/players?

I can’t name a current player as I don’t want to single anyone out. I’ll stick with past players - Simon Black (sorry Charmo!) and Kate Lutkins.

What has changed the most at the Club since you started?

Definitely our spot on the ladder! When I started in 2005, we finished 11th and had a long wait for Finals - first in 2009, then not again until 2019. Now, we’ve been part of Finals action for the last seven seasons.

Who has had the biggest influence on your career at the Lions?

I’ve been lucky to have some awesome General Managers who’ve always challenged me to step up and try new things. Their support and encouragement have been a huge boost to my growth over the years.

If you could relive one game or event, what would it be and why?

Hands down, the 2024 AFL Grand Final! After 20 seasons, finally taking home the silverware was unforgettable - and I’d love to relive every second of that game!
