The Lions welcomed the Queensland Islamic Community into the Den on Saturday night, with more than 420 Muslims coming to the game.

Following the tragic events in Christchurch earlier this month, the Lions with AFL Queensland, spoke to community partner on Multicultural Development Australia (MDA) on ways they could help.

On Friday afternoon the Lions visited mosques and Islamic community centres across the city to invite them to the match on Saturday night. The Queensland Government proudly supported the initiative.

The response from the Islamic community was astounding, with more than 420 Muslims attending the game. The Lions also provided staff to assist educate the attendees who may have been unfamiliar with the Gabba and game of AFL

Speaking at the Gabba on Saturday night, Fahim Khondaker, Director of MDA, said the small gesture of tickets went a long way.

“It’s been a longstanding relationship and it’s a very strong one,” he said of MDA’s partnership with the Lions.

“It’s so much more than just a little gesture.

“You have no idea what the impact that something like this has had on people.

“To just hear the words of ‘welcome’, to get that assurance that we belong as Muslims in this community and to understand that people will jump on board when something like this happens.

“For that tragedy to happen and everyone to gather together so quickly and so easily…it’s really, really heartwarming to us as a community.”

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the Queensland Government want the Islamic community to know they are appreciated and welcomed.

“We have been there for the Muslim/Islamic community of Brisbane and Queensland and we have attended a number of ceremonies at the Islamic College as well as mosques,” she said.

“The focus has been on how we can absolutely make sure that our Muslim brothers and sisters feel as though they are welcome and they know this community is there for them.”

Chairman Andrew Wellington said the Club was proud to welcome them into the Lions Den and hoped more would be inclined to come throughout the season.

“Our mission is to welcome and inspire and engage with people of all communities,” he said.
