With the recent approval of a new members facility at the old Ikea site in Springwood and the urban renewal of the Gabba region moving to another level, the Brisbane Lions and the Chalk Hotel have agreed to close the Lions Den Social Club located behind the Chalk Hotel from today.

The Lions are now focussing on the recently approved and much larger Springwood social club as their entertainment option for members and guests. Meanwhile, the BT Group - which owns the Chalk Hotel - will pursue their own business development options to create a mixed-use development on the land they own around the Chalk Hotel.

This development will add to the Gabba urban renewal following the recent announcement of the proposed development of the Sunmap site at the Gabba.

The Lions Den Social Club off Reid and Stanley Streets was opened in December 2006 as a pre and post-match meeting place for Lions members and supporters, as well as a high quality sports bar for drinks and well valued meals during the week.

"The Chalk Hotel remains a great venue before and after home games for AFL fans being just 200 metres from the Gabba and the members who flock there will be pleased to see Lions branding remain," Lions Chief Executive Michael Bowers said.

"However, the Lions need to focus all our social club assets and energies on our new Springwood location which gives us a great opportunity to offer members and supporters a wide range of entertainment options and services in a new location."

"We wish the Chalk Hotel the very best with their own exciting redevelopment plans. Woolloongabba is certainly growing into a booming inner urban area for them to cater for," Mr Bowers said.

Areas of the Chalk Hotel will retain the 'Brisbane Lions Den' name and sporting identity for the immediate future in consultation with the Club, but the Brisbane Lions will have no official or active involvement in the former Lions Den location.

The Club looks forward to announcing important information about its Springwood facility to all members and supporters later this year.
