Brisbane Lions Vice-Captain Tom Rockliff has capped off a career-best AFL season by being named in the Virgin Australia 2014 AFL All Australian team.

Rockliff becomes the first Lions player in five years to be deemed worthy of a place in the AFL’s official ‘Team of the Year’.

He is also just the 21st player in the Club’s all-time history to be honoured with selection in the All Australian side – joining esteemed company including the likes of Kevin Murray, Garry Wilson, Michael Voss, Simon Black, and Jonathan Brown.

Rockliff was named on the team’s interchange bench, with Dyson Heppell (ESS), Josh Kennedy (SYD), Nat Fyfe (FRE), Joel Selwood (GEEL), and Gary Ablett (GC) occupying the on-field centreline and roving positions.

After dominating the All Australian sides of the early 2000s, the Lions have been largely absent over the past decade, with Brown the only player to have earned All-Australian status in the nine years between 2005-2013.

Rockliff can now add this latest honour to his already impressive AFL resume, which includes two Merrett-Murray Medals and a host of other Club, AFL, and U18 achievements.

The 24-year-old’s selection came as no surprise, considering he averaged more disposals (32.7 per game), more tackles (9.1), and more AFL Fantasy points (134.8) than any other player in the entire competition.

In terms of midfield output he proved as damaging as any other in the game, and racked up 40 or more possessions a total of five times in 2014 – including four times in his final five outings.
