The Brisbane Lions’ 2012 draftees - Sam Mayes , Marco Paparone , and Michael Close - visited the Gabba for the first time on Monday after becoming the latest senior players to join the Club via last week’s AFL National Draft.

The teenage trio landed in Queensland on Sunday night - just three days after hearing their names read out at the Draft.

It will be a whirlwind few weeks for Mayes, Paparone, and Close, who will familiarise themselves with the facilities - and their new teammates - before the Club’s Christmas break.

Paparone, who hails from Western Australia, said he was excited about his future in Brisbane with the Lions.

“I knew Brisbane was a chance (to Draft me), but at Pick 23 I was stoked. I couldn’t be happier,” Paparone said.

“(The weather) is a bit similar to Perth really, just a bit more humid.”

“I think (the first weeks of training are) pretty easy going. There will be a bit of training, but nothing too heavy. It’s more about getting to know everyone and my role.”

Paparone and fellow draftee Close will be moving in with teammate Aaron Cornelius for the time being, while the Club arranges a more permanent residence.

Close, meanwhile, is still coming to terms with being an official teammate of Jonathan Brown.

“I went and saw Browny before which was a bit surreal because he was my idol growing up. He’s just one of the boys now,” Close said.

The North Ballarat Rebels’ big man is now eager to get stuck into pre-season training and make the most of his AFL opportunity.

“I’m just hoping to learn as much as I can and make sure my body is fit and healthy,” Close said.

“Hopefully I can play a NAB Cup game and then see how I go throughout the season.”
