After kicking the final four goals of the game to defeat Port Adelaide, Chris Fagan said it was his team's "will to win" that got them over the line for a third straight week.

The Lions moved to their best start since 2010 with the 17-point victory, but it looked unlikely deep into the final term when they trailed by 10 points.

"We just got our act together for the last 10 minutes and played some strong football," Fagan said.

"It was just guys lifted, they sensed the occasion and obviously have a huge desire to win games of footy and found a way.

"I'm really proud of them for that because it didn't look good when (Ollie) Wines kicked that goal."

Oscar McInerney put the Lions in front inside the final four minutes with a huge pack mark and 40m set shot before goals to Eric Hipwood and Charlie Cameron rounded out the win.

Mitch Robinson was instrumental in the final-quarter surge after being shifted on to the ball – a move Fagan credited to strategy coach Danny Daly.

It wasn't all smooth sailing though, and Fagan said he would have plenty of good – and bad – things to review during the week

"They're very fit," he said.

"We've finished our games off well the first two weeks so there would have been a little confidence inside them from that.

"They've built up a really strong will to win this group.

"They were like that last year, they'd see out games and couldn't win them.

"We can't afford to think any further ahead than next week.

"Maybe at some point in time this year we might have won enough games to make finals, but who knows, I can't predict that, we can just control what we need to do from week to week, so that's what we'll do.

"We'll try very hard to not get ahead of ourselves."
