Lions.com.au takes a closer look at some of the statistics from the team’s Round 19 match against St Kilda at the Gabba.

Goose’s goal
It might have taken him 52 matches, but Matt Maguire’s first goal in Lions colours was a memorable one.

Not only did it come against his former side St Kilda, with whom Maguire kicked 19 goals in 99 matches, but also came with a high degree of difficulty after he shrugged a couple of Saints opponents before slotting the goal from near the boundary.

You could tell from the celebration that ‘Goose’ was pretty pleased to have finally hit the scoreboard with his new Club.

Fellow defender Sam Docherty also kicked his first goal with the Lions, and in AFL, last Saturday night against St Kilda. However, Docherty had to wait only 10 games to get his name on the goal-kickers list.

Rookie Justin Clarke now has the longest goal drought at the Club, but is still only 13 games into what promises to be a long AFL career.

Staker’s triple treat
Speaking of goal-kickers, 150-gamer Brent Staker kicked three goals for the third time in five matches against St Kilda.

Staker’s career-best haul in a single match is four goals – achieved twice with West Coast.

The utility currently boasts a career-best season average of 1.27 goals per game in 2013, which is remarkable considering he’s returning from consecutive knee reconstructions.

Rocky in midfield form
Tom Rockliff was the Lions’ leading possession-getter for the fourth straight week, after collecting 39 possessions (18 contested) against St Kilda.

Rockliff was only one possession shy of the merged Club record, which he already shares with former champion Luke Power.

Merrett the forward
With Jonathan Brown sidelined with what appeared to be a serious foot injury, Daniel Merrett looked at home as the main spearhead in attack.

Merrett was among the Lions’ best with 18 possessions (11 contested), seven marks (three contested), an equal game-high three goals, and one goal assist.

If Brown fails to return in 2013, the Lions will take some comfort knowing that Merrett can shoulder the load in attack.

Free kicks
The Lions once again had the raw end of the umpires, with the free kick count clearly in favour of St Kilda 19-7. It was the eighth straight match that the Club has conceded more free kicks than the opposition.

It looks like there’s still plenty of work to be done if the Lions are to relinquish their position as the competition leaders in ‘frees against’.

Hanley’s early return
If there was any doubt surrounding Pearce Hanley’s fitness before Saturday night’s game, it had well and truly disappeared by Sunday morning.

Sporting a glove to protect his broken hand suffered two weeks earlier, Hanley looked in no discomfort as he worked his way to 27 disposals – including 12 handballs!

The Irishman also took eight marks and pumped the ball inside 50m on six occasions.
