I'll be back, says Brown
Lions skipper Jonathan Brown guarantees he will return from injury for round three
BRISBANE Lions captain Jonathan Brown has guaranteed he will be back for the club's round three AFL clash with Fremantle in Perth - unless of course he picks up another injury.
Brown sustained his third serious head injury from the past 12 months when he fractured his cheekbone in a marking contest with teammate Matt Maguire late last month.
But he was back at training just seven days later and confidently declared at Thursday's captain's launch in Sydney that he would be back on April 14 at Patersons Stadium.
"I'm feeling good and I'm looking forward to getting into the season," he said.
"Round three definitely I'll be back - unless something happens in the next couple of weeks.
"I just have to dodge the stray kicks from the boys at training."
Brown's injury last month came after two freak accidents last season that both left him requiring facial surgery, in round one and again in round 17.
The 30-year-old had been training the house down until his latest setback in an intra-club hit-out, but he insisted he had barely skipped a beat this time.
"I haven't been interrupted to be honest. I've probably missed three days of training," he said.
"I have to train on my own a fair bit with a few of the staff guys, but apart from that it's been nothing like the past injuries.
"I haven't undone the pre-season.
"It hasn't been ideal in terms of missing pre-season games, but I've been around long enough that 20 games during the year will be enough anyway."
While Brown will be absent for the opening two weeks, the skipper was asked about the emotion that will surround the Lions' round one match against a Melbourne side that will still be reeling from the death of Jim Stynes.
The match will be played on what is sure to be a moving Saturday afternoon at the MCG.
"It goes without saying it's going to be a huge day for football in general," he said.
"It's probably the biggest passing since Teddy Whitten.
"But the end of the day, in round one sides are up and about and ready to go and want to start well.
"We know we've got to be ready to go and we're up for the challenge."
